the 62 comment lesson

well, thank you all for your support for my previous post.  don't expect anymore exciting flame wars like that anymore :P  i'm normally a very peace-loving, low profile guy.  (its true.... though i doubt most of you would believe me)  i hope nobody took any offense from the whole episode, and i apologise for any grief caused.

anyway, i think there were quite a few things i learnt from the whole episode.

1. (i think) generating interest isn't very hard compared to sustaining interest.  the latter is the recipe for success in this fast pace, tightly knit web 2.0.  the former normally fades into darkness due to the lack of real substance(aka me).  there are definitely exceptions, but frankly I don't think such people make any contribution what-so-ever to this planet.

so i think the biggest challenge lies in turning attention into opportunity and value.

2. watch your words on the web.  because of the lack of tone, context and familiarity, your words can be easily misinterpreted.  again, this by no means is something new, but i think nothing drives home the message clearer than making the mistake yourself.

3. (i feel) its pointless getting into a fight online.  there are no winners.  i think people who have frequented forums will definitely agree with me.   even though you may be right, bowing out really might not be the worse thing.  there are jackasses (like me) who just want to start a fight for the sake of starting a fight. just let them be.

or, if you're bored, you could always just entertain them.

4. prof ben is cool.  seriously, find me another prof that would praise you for starting a flame war?

  2. Anyway, one's response to criticism is revealing of his/her character. I am glad that you stayed lighthearted in this whole saga. =)

Yah.. I believe that.. haha.. Not to mention determined and humble too =P

    1. so i think the biggest challenge lies in turning attention into opportunity and value.
Yah.. Ris Low is a great example of that.. Look how she turn actually turned all her waves of bad publicity into her advantage.. Of course.. she was really thick-skinned.. She was named by CNN as the most influential in Asia ... Perharps Bad Publicity is really better than no publicity.. haha

    2. watch your words on the web. because of the lack of tone, context and familiarity, your words can be easily misinterpreted.
haha..Nothing beats learning it the "hard" way.. haha..Reading through your 63 comments post from a 3rd party view, I think it was simply a case of misunderstanding ba.. All your posts seemed to be just innocent posts of your own opinions.. =P

Like what he mentioned and stressed before:
"Remember: there are VERY FEW reasonable things, if there's any at all (I can't think of any at this moment), that CANNOT be done in CS3216."
Starting a Flame War does fall under a reasonable thing to try.. I gues.s.. =P Afterall, looking back, it'll be one interesting and epic episode to remember for in this batch of 3216.. I'm sure new bonds will be forged after everyone take one step back and relook at the whole episode.. =P

I wonder if this is the first time a Flame war started in the history of 3216.. hha

  7. I think one of the great things about being in Uni is that most of us are mature enough to know not to take things too personally. ;-)

I quite enjoyed the whole experience, to be honest, and was taken by surprise when Prof encouraged me to go ahead with whatever it was that I wanted to say. He later turned that into an object lesson of how people may misinterpret things online.

    Coffee session coming up. =)

  8. I think you look really peaceful and serene :)

@bai: as a father in church says, they only call her influential to save face. She isn't going to cause any real changes. Or as he says "perhaps, Prada will use leopard preens next season".

Uhh, well I also learnt something. Ji Wei actually thought J.Lo and I were really arguing so he thought I was being a complete idiot ;( So yeah, on the internet, things can really be interpreted differently. Well, they could also in real life, so the thing is we have to be as clear and conscious as possible.

  9. @shannon: peaceful and serene :S haha. anyway i dont think jiwei was the only one who thought you guys were being silly. if your own team mate (who knew your fantastic working relationship) misunderstood, you can expect what some people might have thought haha. but i found it entertaining and funny :)

@henry: thank you. (fellow acsian for the win!). i think ris is starting to fade off le. she was suppose to organize a beauty pageant, wonder how's that coming along now... but in terms of doing nothing yet sustaining attention, i dont think anyone can beat paris hilton. its just ridiculous when you think about it.

i hope you guys had as much fun as i did :P
